However, they are often conducted separately. Software vulnerabilities due to design errors, inconsistencies, incompleteness, and missing constraints can lead to hazards and safety failures. Our aim as Software Engineers is to design software that delivers correct services and evades faults that are capable of altering the behavior of the system, thus causing unwarranted side effects. This talk will focus on improving the quality of software by clearly defining and understanding safety concerns as the software is being designed. We will explore how the fault trees can be designed modularly and dynamically through the use of components and reusability.

Career Connections with the PA Dept. of Labor & Industry

Tuesday, March 13 at noon, in room E334.

Meet Sue Zehner, Recruiter with Labor & Industry, and learn about applying for information technology opportunities with the state of PA. Thirty-five students participated in the contest, attempting to solve as many problems as possible in two hours. The problem set consisted of five challenging problems, and the solutions had to produce an exact copy of the expected output for a large number of tests, subject to constraints on running time, memory use, and coding standards.

The first place finishers in each category will receive a $100 prize, with a $50 prize for second place, and a $25 prize for third place. The top three finishers for the two categories are as follows:

Undergraduate Students
First Place: John Seaman
Second Place: Armand Soulliard
Third Place: Sylar Jesse

Graduate Students
First Place: Jason Long
Second Place: Yi Deng
Third Place: Christopher Jackson

In the Undergraduate Student category, the second and third place finishes were very close. Armand Soulliard and Skylar Jesse both answered the same number of questions correctly, with the tie being broken only by the total time taken to answer the questions.

In the Graduate Student category, there was a three-way tie for second place that had to be broken by the total submission time. Yi Deng, Christopher Jackson, and Allen Brubaker all answered the same number of questions correctly.

In a very impressive showing, Jason Long, the first-place graduate student, answered all questions with 15 minutes left in the competition.

Penn State Harrisburg Students Speak at the Moravian College Student Mathematics Conference

On Saturday February 18, several members of the Penn State Harrisburg Math Club, along with Dr. Boman and Dr. Walker, attended the Moravian College Student Mathematics Conference. We will briefly discuss a few results proven about this game around the time of the appearance of Gardner's article. We will then quickly turn to a question recently posed by Brian Hopkins and Michael Jones about finding an exact formula for the number of Garden of Eden partitions (which are closely associated with Bulgarian solitaire and which I will define in the talk). I will prove such an exact formula which was developed a few years ago when I first met Brian Hopkins and learned of this problem. Given continuous boundary data, Dirichlet solutions are guaranteed to exist and to be unique for a broad class of domains. Also it is known that if the domain is the unit disk (or more generally an ellipse), then polynomial boundary data will yield polynomial Dirichlet solutions. In this talk, we will explore several generalizations and variations of this latter result, such as cases where the boundary data is rational or entire, or over other domains.

Faculty Seminar Series: Computer Security Threats to Critical Infrastructure

You are invited to attend the following seminar.

Title: Computer Security Threats to Critical Infrastructure
Speaker: Dr. Jeremy Blum
Date/Time: Wednesday, Nov. 16, 12:00-1:30
Location: Gallery Lounge, Olmsted Building, Penn State Harrisburg

Synopsis:

Computer security attacks against critical infrastructure present a significant and growing global threat. According to the report:

Two of the fastest growing detailed occupations are in the computer specialist occupational group. Network systems and data communications analysts are projected to be the second-fastest-growing occupation in the economy. Demand for these workers will increase as organizations continue to upgrade their information technology capacity and incorporate the newest technologies. The growing reliance on wireless networks will result in a need for more network systems and data communications analysts as well. Computer applications software engineers also are expected to grow rapidly from 2008 to 2018. Expanding Internet technologies have spurred demand for these workers, who can develop Internet, intranet, and Web applications.

The top twenty fastest growing occupations are listed in the table below:

Table 1. Recent trends indicate that more individuals are voluntarily sharing personal information, tracking their location, and forming new associations. However, they do so without considering the personal privacy and security implications. This panel will discuss the personal benefits of sharing location-based information, the personal and security implications of oversharing, and strategies to improve locational privacy and personal security.

Moderator: Roderick L. It is also enjoying a renewed interest because of its proven trouble-free design, its ability to lift wastewater and debris-laden water effectively, and its gentle treatment of aquatic life. In this presentation, Dr. Chris Rorres will give a history of this device from Archimedes' time to the 21st century and also present his research on the design that maximizes the amount of water lifted in each turn of the screw.

About the Speaker

Dr. Rorres is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Drexel University and Lecturer of Epidemiology at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a lifelong student of the life and works of Archimedes and has appeared in many television documentaries explaining Archimedes' discoveries, inventions, and continuing influence. Through his research activities he has continued and extended Archimedes' seminal works on hydrostatics, mechanics, and the Archimedes Screw. His web site on Archimedes, established in 1995, is visited by hundreds of thousands of students and scholars each year.

Image from FCIT.

Career Fairs and On-Campus Interviews

There are a number of upcoming important events for students looking for a job after graduation. Imagine if you were among them representing the United States.

James Cameron, acclaimed director of the Titanic and Avatar, commented on student projects by saying "It's pretty inspirational to see what they are coming up with... they are really thinking outside the box". Craig Mundie, Chief Research and Strategy Officer commented last year's U.S. Finals by saying "Nothing here is science fiction". Bill Gates added "Imagine Cup is one of my favorite student programming events".

What are the competition categories?
Students can compete in any or all of these five exciting categories:
1) Software Design - Develop an application that helps solve one of the world's toughest problems.
2) Embedded Development - From mobile phones and GPS units to electronic switches, develop an embedded system or device that addresses a critical issue.
3) Game Design - Multilevel or single player, 3-D or 2-D, web, Xbox, Windows, or phone, it's up to you. Everybody wins with games that solve real world problems
4) Digital Media - Go viral with your music, videos, or photos. This fall's meeting was a special joint meeting with the New Jersey section of the MAA. There were invited talks given by Dr. William Dunham of Muhlenberg College ("Two (More) Morsels from Euler"), Dr. Brian Hopkins of St. Peter’s College ("Partition Dynamics ABCs: Avalanche Models, Bulgarian Solitaire, and Combinatorial Proofs"), and Dr. Sarah Greenwald of Appalachian State University ("Rubik's Cube Games on Spheres: Geometry of Spherical Orbifolds"), plus there were a number of talks given by undergraduate and graduate students from across the region.

Two of our own gave talks. Debra Bruch spoke on "The Harmony between Math and Music". She showcased how mathematics plays a central role in many principles of sound and music. Brett Eyer's talk, titled "The Dependencies of Euclid", revealed the relations between various propositions in Book 1 of the Elements of Euclid, culminating in a demonstration of those used to establish the Pythagorean Theorem. (Note: Brett is scheduled to give an encore presentation of his talk at the next Math Club meeting following the Thanksgiving break.)

Altogether, six students from Penn State Harrisburg, Debra Bruch, Tyler Derr, Brett Eyer, Khizra Hussain, Gege Pincin, and Micah Victoria, attended and enjoyed the variety of talks, not to mention several other tangential experiences. (Please feel free to ask any who attended about the dynamics of Bulgarian solitaire, the work of Bourbaki, or the perplexities of higher dimensional spheres.) Both Debra Bruch and Micah Victoria won special books as door prizes.

The EPaDel section of MAA holds both fall and spring meetings. The research, joint work with Prof. Jeremy Blum, was titled, “Maximizing Mix Zone Effectiveness for the Mitigation of De-Anonymization Threats in the Traffic Probe Message Service.” The abstract is listed below:

The Traffic Probe Message Service uses vehicle-to-roadside wireless communication to collect kinematic and other state data from participating vehicles. The draft standard requires vehicles to use pseudonymous identifiers in order to hide their identity. Whenever vehicles transmit state data to base stations called roadside equipment, the vehicles change their identifier and halt the collection of state data for a random period. These changes are designed to prevent a de-anonymization attack from reconstructing a vehicle’s path through the road network. Thus, the roadside equipment creates mix zones, which given enough vehicles within a zone and sufficient changes in vehicle mobility patterns, can reduce the success of de-anonymization attacks. In highway scenarios, optimal mixing is likely in the regions near highway interchanges. This paper hypothesizes that given the rules snapshot generation, the optimal place for pseudonym changes is upstream of the middle of an interchange. Simulations of various traffic conditions in a large highway scenario support this hypothesis, and suggest that roadside equipment be placed such that they create pseudonym changes at these locations in order to maximize the ability of mix zones to mitigate de-anonymization threats.

Previously, Blum and Okosun had presented a broad set of recommendations for privacy protection in the Traffic Probe Message Service in the paper, “Privacy Implications of the Traffic Probe Message Service.” This paper was presented at the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Conference in Madeira, Portugal.

--
Jeremy Blum, D.Sc.
Assistant Professor of Computer Science
Penn State Harrisburg
777 W. The team scores were based on the number of problems correctly solved. In the case of a tie, the total time required to solve the problems is used as a tie-breaker. However, any incorrect submission resulted in a penalty of 20 minutes being added to the total time.

The problem sets for the ACM competitions are notoriously difficult. Teams can find that a small mistake in their proposed solution prevents them from successfully solving a problem. Moreover, it can be very difficult to determine the nature of the mistake due to the very limited information provided by the automated grading system. Both teams worked hard in the competition. And the team, comprised of Jennifer Green, Amanda Minner, and John Seaman, was able to place ahead of nearly 100 teams. The teams are now looking forward to programming competitions in the spring, including one that will be held for local teams at nearby Dickinson College.

If you are interested in participating in upcoming programming contests, please contact Prof. Jeremy Blum at jjb24@psu.edu.

--
Jeremy Blum, D.Sc.
Assistant Professor of Computer Science
Penn State Harrisburg
777 W. Brent Morris at Penn State Harrisburg. The talk, entitled “Magic Tricks, Card Shuffling, and Dynamic Computer Memories,” began with a card trick. This card trick was a staple of Dr. Morris’ repertoire, as he worked his way through college and graduate school as a magician.

The card trick uses a series of perfect shuffles. In a perfect shuffle, the cards from two halves of a deck are perfectly interlaces, alternating one card from one half and one card from the other half. With his interest in both math and magic, Dr. Morris worked out the mathematics that underlies his magic trick. In fact, the mathematics of the perfect shuffle became the topic for his doctoral dissertation. He muses that he may have the only doctorate ever awarded in card shuffling.

After he graduated, he went to work for the National Security Agency (NSA). His first task at the NSA was to design an efficient Dynamic Computer Memory Circuit. When presented with this problem, a light bulb went off in his head – the mathematics behind the most efficient implementation of this circuit were the exact same mathematics as those for the magic trick.

Dr. Morris has been nominated by the Mathematical Association of America to be one of the USA Science and Engineering Festival's Nifty Fifty Speakers. Given the response of students at Penn State Harrisburg, this nomination was well deserved.

If you would like to be notified about future speakers and events, please send an email to jjb24@psu.edu.

--
Jeremy Blum, D.Sc.
Assistant Professor of Computer Science
Penn State Harrisburg
777 W.
